Some rule changes to be aware of:
Last year the State changed the rules (similar to the current college rules)
that if a wrestler takes his/her second injury time then the opposing wrestler
has choice of top, down, or neutral. (This occurred in the 130 lb. match against
Boone). If a wrestler takes a third injury time, he/she is disqualified and
will forfeit the match.
Here is
a full desription of the rule.
Here is Dan Gable's take on the rule:
"The new rule basically means if there if a a second
injury time out is taken or needed, the opponent will have his choice
of taking top, bottom or neutral. What it's doing is it's keeping athletes
that really don't need time outs taking them. Because they know that in
certain situations they could end up losing the match because of the ability
for the opponent to have a position start. I do think that is is impacting
the sport because athletes will be taking fewer time outs. The only problem
here I see where there is a legitimate injury time out needed and because
it's either taken or not, it could jeopardize the athlete in a couple
different ways. Over all it appears to be more effective than non-effective."
Another rule to note is that after a stoppage in a match, a wrestler in
the top position can choose to have the match restarted in neutral and the
opposing wrestler will receive 1 escape point.
